Auf dem Weg zwischen Athen und Sounion übernachten wir bei Anavyssos in der Nähe des Strandes. Morgens wollte ich die Angler weit vorne am Strand fotografieren, um das Zoom an der neuen Kamera auszutesten. Erst daheim entdecke ich das verunglückte Boot im Meer dahinter.
On the way from Athens to Sounion we spend the night near Anavyssos on the edge of the beach. In the morning I want to photograph anglers far away on the beach to test the zoom of the new camera. Only when we get home do I notice the half-submerged boat in the sea beyond.
Auf dem Kap Sounion befindet sich in dramatischer Lage der Poseidontempel. Es ist ca. 70 km von Athen entfernt am Ende der Attika Halbinsel. Im Hintergrund des Bildes sieht man die 6 km entfernte Insel Patroklou, einen erloschenen Vulkan.
Kap Sounion is the dramatic setting of the Temple of Poseidon. It is ca. 70 km from Athens at the southern end of the Attica peninsular. In the background of the picture 6 km away is the Island of Patroklou, an extinct volcano.
In der Mitte des Bildes liegen die kargen Reste vom Propylon, dem Eingangsbereich des Poseidontempels. Links stehen die restlichen Säulen des dorischen Tempels, der ca. 440 v. Chr. mit 6 x 13 Säulen errichtet wurde. Das war zur gleichen Zeit, als der Parthenon in Athen gebaut wurde.
Poseidon war Gott des Meeres und Zweitmächitgster in der Hierarchie der griechischen Götter.
In the middle of the picture are the few remains of the Propylon, the entrance area of the Temple of Poseidon. On the left are the remaining columns of the 6 x 13 column Doric temple that was built in ca. 440 BC. That was at the same time as the Parthenon was built in Athens.
Poseidon was the God of the Sea and the second most important god in the hierarchy of Greek gods.
Am längsten Tag des Jahres geht die Sonne (vom Tempel aus gesehen) direkt hinter der Caldera des Vulkans auf der Insel Patroklou unter.

In der Nähe des Tempels in den felsigen Klippen von Kap Sounion kann ein deutlicher Löwenkopf entdeckt werden.

Auf der Klippe östlich vom Tempel und nachher direkt an den Stufen des Tempels haben wir eine Schar Steinhühner gesehen.
On the cliffs to the east of the temple and later directly on the steps of the temple we saw a flock of Rock Partridges.
Die Vögel an der Tempeltreppe schienen sehr an Menschen gewohnt und ließen Elli sehr nah herankommen - siehe die Spiegelung im Auge des Vogels.
The ones on the temple steps seemed to be very accustomed to people and let Elli get very close - see her reflection in the birds eye.
Ca. 11 km nördlich von Kap Sounion an der Ostküste der Attika-Halbinsel fahren wir durch Lavrio.
Von ca. 3200 v.Chr. an war die Gegend das wichtigste Zentrum für Bergwerk in der Antike. Hauptsächlich fand man Silber, Blei und Kupfer und der große Ertrag hat einen wesentlichen Beitrag geleistet zur Finanzierung der Großprojekte im Goldenen Zeitalter der athenischen Demokratie.
Von 1860 bis 1990 wurde die Industrie wieder aufgenommen. Von der Straße aus sieht man manche Hinweise: links die Ruine eines Bergwerkturms und rechts eine Abraumhalde.
Die Region um Lavrio, auch unter dem antiken Namen Laurion bekannt, ist Kandidat für Aufnahme in die Liste des Unesco Weltkulturerbes.
About 11 km to the north of Cape Sounion on the east coast of the Attic peninsular we drive through Lavrio.
From ca. 3200 BC onwards the area was the most important centre for mining in the ancient world. Especially silver, lead and copper were found and the large proceeds made a significant contribution to financing the large projects of the Golden Age of Athenian Democracy.
The industry was pursued again from 1860 to 1990. From the road some evidence of this can be seen: left a derelict mining tower and right a slag heap.
The region around Lavrio, also known by the ancient name of Laurion, is candidate for inclusion in the Unesco World Cultural Heritage List.
