Im Vordergrund links sind die Ausgrabungen des Gräberkreises B, der außerhalb der Stadtmauer liegt.
Dort wurden über zehn Gräber gefunden mit Grabbeigaben, die darauf hindeuten, dass es sich um königliche Gräber handelt.

Zwei Löwinnen (oder eventuell Sphinxe, die Köpfe fehlen) dekorieren das mächtige Tor. Der Durchgang ist 2,95m hoch und 3,10m breit. Allein der Türsturz unter den Löwinnen wiegt ca. 12 Tonnen.

Two lionesses, (or maybe sphinxes, the heads are missing), decorate the mighty gate. The gateway is 2.95m high and 3.10m wide and the lintel alone under the lionesses weighs about 12 tons.

Unter den wertvollen Artefakten, die im Grabkreis A gefunden wurden, war die so genannte Goldmaske des Agamemnon, die im Nationalmuseum in Athen ausgestellt ist.
Da König Agamemnon erst ca. 1180 v. Chr. zurück aus Troja gekommen sein soll, muss die Maske einem anderen gehört haben. Böse Zungen haben sogar von einer gewissen Ähnlichkeit mit Schliemann gesprochen.

Among the valuable artefacts found is the so-called Mask of Agamemnon, which is exhibited in the National Museum in Athens.
As King Agamemnon is supposed to have come back from Troy in about 1180 BC, the mask must have belonged to someone else. Malicious gossip of the time said that the mask had a certain similarity to Schliemann himself.

From the Palace Hill we look westward into the valley over the part of the citadel near the entrance.
For orientation: the upper part of the Lion Gate is directly in the middle to the left of the first green tree. Left of that is Grave Circle A, then further left the buildings where the objects in the following pictures were found.

Die meisterhafte Wandmalerei einer Frau (ca. 1350 v.Chr.) und die Kriegervase (12. JH v. Chr) mit feinen, cartoonähnlichen Soldaten auf dem Weg in den Krieg wurden in Mykene gefunden. Beide sind jetzt im Museum in Athen zu sehen.

The masterful mural of a lady (ca. 1350 BC) and the Warrior Vase (12th C BC) showing fine cartoon-like soldiers on their way to war were found in Mycenae. Both can now be seen in the museum in Athens.

Es gibt weitere Gebäude auf dem Hügel der Zitadelle, die wir allerdings nicht sehr inspirierend fanden, darunter ein Teil des Palastes (li) und ein so genanntes Gebäude Gamma (re).

There are further buildings on the citadel hill, but we didnt find them very inspiring. Among them part of the palace (l) and the so-called Gamma Building (r).

Sehr bemerkenswert sind die Tholos- oder Bienenkorb-Gräber in Mykene.
Hier der ca. 3,30m hohe Eingang (unsere Schätzung) zum Löwengrab aus dem frühen 14. JH v. Chr. Das Grab darf aus verständlichen Sicherheitsgründen nicht betreten werden, weil die Mauern des kollabierten Tholos wohl instabil sind.

The Tholos or Beehive Graves in Mycenae are very remarkable.
Here is the entrance to the Lion Grave, (early 14th C BC), which we estimate to be about 3.30m high. Entrance is forbidden for understandable security reasons - the walls of the collapsed earlier Tholos look unstable.

Noch prachtvoller ist das so genannte Schatzhaus des Atreus aus der Mitte des 14. JH v. Chr, in dem der Tholos noch intakt ist.
Manche der Steinblöcke im Dromos, der Passage zum Grab, sind riesig (siehe ganz rechts).

Der runde Raum hat einen Durchmesser von 14,50m und ist 13,20m hoch. Als wir alleine waren konnten wir die gute Akustik testen!
Der Eingang (re) zum kleinen, dunklen Seitenraum ist gesperrt. Auf dem Plan misst er ca. 6 m x 6 m.

The round chamber has a diameter of 14.50m and is 13.20m high. When we were alone we were able to test the good acoustics!
The entrance to the smaller dark side chamber (r) is blocked. According to the plan the room is about 6m x 6m.

Dieses Bienenkorbgrab war sicherlich ein Highlight des Besuchs.
