Das goldenen Herz Europas

The golden Heart of Europe

Kremnica
Kremnitz

Near the end of our time in Slovakia we visit the old mining town of Kremnica. It is located at about 560m in the Kremnica Mountains 175 km from Bratislava.
In the middle ages its gold deposits made it one of the worlds major mining towns. As the geographic centre of Europe is only a few kilometres away, the town now combines both facts and calls itself proudly: The golden Heart of Europe.

In one corner of the main square stand the old Mint building. The Kremnica Mint is the oldest still active mint in the world and has been in continuous operation since its founding on 17th November 1328 by King Charles Robert of Anjou.  Kremnica ducats were internationally well accepted as hard currency for over 500 years because of their high and consistent gold quality.
Nowadays the mint manufactures coins and medals for Slowakia and also for many other countries. Since 2009 Slovakia uses the Euro and their Euro coins are marked with MK standing for Mincovňna Kremnica (Kremnica Mint).

While we were there major restoration work was going on in the square so the Baroque Fountain on the right of the picture was not on very good display.

St. Francis Kirche, Kremnitz / St. Francis Church, Kremnica

Franziskus.

On the west side of the central St. Stephens Square, (Stefanikovo Namestie), stands St. Francis Church.

Various sculptures are on display around the town. Here are two which both apparently represent the town. On the left is the circle of houses around the central square. The sculpture stands close to the Museum of Coins and Medals.
In the sculpture on the right the mining industry is portrayed symbolically as the foundation of the town and of its prosperity.

Above the square storm clouds offer for a short time a dramatic backdrop for the Baroque Plague Memorial. It was built between 1765 and 1772 and is decorated with over 60 figures. Beyond it are the Castle and the Church of St. Catherine with the white Lesser Tower standing directly in front of it.

Walking through the old town one gets glimpses of old courtyards with inviting-looking restaurants.

One of which we try out and we enjoy a tasty and (for us) inexpensive meal.

Part of the old defensive system of  the town was the Gothic Barbican, which now houses the information centre.

(Siehe unten.)

Stadtschloss und Kirche der St. Katharina, Kremnitz / Castle and church of St. Catherine, Kremnica

High above the town is the Castle with the Church of St. Catherine at its highest point.
The buildings date back to the 13th C. From the 14th C the castle was seat of the important Chamber Count who had a high position responsible for mining and minting in the Kingdom of Hungary.
His residence was later converted into the church.
The church tower can be climbed to give a very fine view over the town. (See below.)

Stairs up to and down from the castle. (There are plenty more before you reach the top of the church tower.)

From the top of  St. Catherines Church we look down to the North Tower and the 13th C Ossuary building with St. Andrew's Chapel above it.

In St. Andrew's Chapel there are remains of Gothic wall paintings. Some can be identified, e.g. the torture (left) and (centre) decapitation of Christian martyrs. (Presumably not St. Andrew, who according to tradition died on a cross.)

Beinhaus, Kremnitz / Ossuary, Kremnica

Below the chapel is the Ossuary. There was not much to be seen in the dark basement, but the flash photo shows what is there. (For a more dramatic picture of an Ossuary, see our report of Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic.)

From the church tower we discove one of the old mining buildings in the distance. The last gold was mined in Kremnica in 1970.  At that time the mines were finally closed.

From the tower of St. Catherines Church there is a fine panoramic view of the old town.
Below us to the left of centre is the South Tower protecting the stairway up to the castle. On the right of it is the roof of the Lesser Tower, beyond which the Plague Column can be seen in the green St. Stephens Square. To the right is the red-roofed old Mint building.

For more about Kremnica see Wikipedia.

After visiting Kremnica we are at the end of our interesting trip to Slovakia and head back home to Nagold in Southern Germany.
