Moldoviţa & Suceviţa

Moldauische Perlen

Moldavian Pearls

No report about Romania is complete without an overflowing hay-cart!
The Moldavian winters are long and hard, but by the end of May nature demonstrates its bounty. Here the first hay harvest is brought in in preparation for the next winter. We met this well-loaded hay-cart during our trip to the Moldovita Monastery - weve forgotten how we avoided an accident!.

The monastery church of Moldovita, which is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, is hidden behind high walls. The predominant colour is yellow. The church is similar in layout to the older church in Humor with its open entrance hall, but in contrast to Humor there is a tower here with a Moldavian cupola inside it.

This view shows the impressive entrance hall. The monastery buildings - now partly reconstructed - were integrated into the surrounding defensive walls. The former princely residence building on the left now houses the monastery museum.
Stephen the Greats illegitimate son Petru Rares founded the Moldovita Monastery in 1532 on the site of a former monastery which had been destroyed by a landslide. The church, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, was painted five years later. The frescoes are of high artistic value and some of them are very well preserved.

The long south wall is a fine example of the typical program of pictures which is to be found on all the painted exteriors of the Bucovina churches. However, depending on the artist, the pictures are different in both execution and in choice of colours.
The left upper half of the photo contains 24 pictures portraying the 24 verse Akathistos Hymnus, the ca. 5th century hymn in praise of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus which plays an important role in the Orthodox liturgy.
Below this is the siege of Constantinople (see below). Moving to the right, next comes the family tree of Jesse, then after that on the three apses, (of which only the south apse is shown in the photo), the hierarchy of the saints.

Moldovita is famous for the well preserved painting of the siege of Constantinople. The besieged Christians in the city are being attacked by turbanned Muslims. At the time when the picture was painted Constantinople was already long in Osman hands. The Byzantine empire collapsed in 1453. So the picture is understood to portray an attack in the 7th century in which the city withstood a siege of the Avars. After the fall of Constantinople the Principality of Moldavia was in fact the easternmost outpost of Christianity and thus under continual threat from attacks by the Turks.
This picture is interpreted as a plea that Moldavia should not share  the fate of the city of Constantinople. (To see more detail click on the picture.)

Stephen the Great (1457-1504), who was later canonized for his defence of Christianity, was in fact continually at war with the Ottoman empire. His efforts were recognized during his life (e.g. the title True Champion of the Christian Faith awarded to him by Pope Sixtus IV), but the western countries failed to give him military support, so Stephen made a treaty with Sultan Bayezid II which guaranteed Moldavias independence but cost a yearly tribute of 4000 gold ducats. On his deathbed he is said to have given the advice to trust a Muslim rather than a Christian.

Here we look across at the church from the living quarters of the nuns. During the rule of the Ottomans, thanks to Stephens diplomacy, the monasteries remained untouched, but under the Habsburgs (1776-1861) Joseph II had many of them closed, including this one. In 1945 Moldovita was returned to the nuns, who were allowed to run the monastery under Ceausescus regime. Today 38 nuns carry on the monastery and are also restoring it.

The nuns keep the spirit of the monastery alive. The churches are not just museums, although there are fears that the streams of tourists may severely disturb devotions. As the pictures show, the nuns - some quite young - involve themselves in support and education of visitors.

The view of the imposing entrance hall from the well- tended monastery garden.

A nun hurries in to her duties though the beautiful entrance. The fresco directly over the doorway is one of the most sensitive representations of the Our Lady of Mercy tenderly holding the Child Christ.
As on the west wall of Voronet scenes from the Last Judgement are shown here as well, e.g. the red vortex leading down into hell.

Part of the Iconostasis (icon screen) with the royal door in the centre. The later the Moldavian monasteries were built, the more resplendent they are.

Jh. stammen.

The upper part of the iconostasis. The remarkable cross dates from 1593, the other icons from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The view across the meadow to the monastery museum, in which, among other things, the royal throne from the time of Petru Rares is on display.
In front of the museum a white statue of Petru Rares is  visible in the picture. He lies buried in the monastery garden.

The first and also last view of the Moldovita church  from the entrance gate. The figures of the Supplication Group (Deesis), angels, prophets, apostles and martyrs all approach in attitudes of invocation from left and right the two central representations of the Mother of God with Child and the Lamb of God.

An old but living tradition in Bucovina is the artistic decoration of eggshells. At the monastery entrance some boys offer us beautiful eggs at a price of only one Euro each. We buy 6.
These two show two different eggshell-painting techniques. On the left is the modern technique of directly applying coloured wax, which gives a textured surface and allows many new motives. The egg on the right shows an older technique. Wax was put on in patterns, then the egg dipped in colour and finally the wax melted away. The parts previously covered with wax remain white or the previous colour. The process is repeated for the different colours until this very artistic result is produced.
We now think the price was very low for this arduous work!

We do something which is not necessarily to be  recommended: we visit three monasteries in one day.
Through quiet mountainous countryside, which reminds us of the higher parts of the Black Forest in Germany, we drive up to the Ciumarna Pass (1100m) and then on down into the Sucevita valley.

The achievement of building the pass road is celebrated by this socialist monument at the top.
Romanian businessmen pause on their journeys to climb the few steps up to the monument for the view (or for a cigarette).

In the valley we reach the surprisingly well-preserved Monastery of Sucevita. As the fresco over the entrance gate shows, it is dedicated to the resurrection  of Christ. In the middle of the stone arch above the fresco is the heraldic animal of Moldavia - an aurochs with a star between its horns - which is also part of todays Romanian coat of arms.

Going in through the door you have the monastery church of Sucevita in front of you. It stands in the middle of the uniquely well-preserved defensive walls. Sucevita is the last and largest of the Moldavian monasteries built with three apses in trefoil pattern and painted on the exterior. The Metropolitan Bishop Gheorghe Movila founded it in 1582. Thanks to the generous endowments of the prince Ieremia Movila it is the richest and most sumptuous of the monasteries.
In contrast to the other monasteries the painting on the north side is in excellent condition.
Directly under the roof, to the left of the lighter series of pictures with scenes of Adam and Eve in Paradise (see Voronet), is one of the most famous frescoes of these monasteries, the Heavenly Ladder of St. John Klimax. In the 6th century the monk on Mt. Sinai wrote a well-known tract on the pursuit of virtue.

The ladder has 30 rungs (actually 31 - the bottom one counts as zero!) showing the 30 virtues which man must practise in his search for holiness. The angels help him on his arduous climb and whisper Biblical texts of encouragement into his ears. The danger of falling is ever-present, even near the top. Devils pull the people down into hell and at top left an angel backs up the devils decision by prodding a failed saint with his spear down towards the depths.

On the left and right sides of the nave the church has two open entrance halls. In one of them two nuns pause for discussion. In contrast to other Moldavian monasteries the one at Sucevita was not closed during Habsburg rule.

The representation of the Last Judgement is on an inside wall this time. We are amused at the way the ocean fish are graphically shown coughing up the people they have swallowed for the final judgement.
The frescoes at Sucevita show the development of the monastery painting in Bucovina from pure symbolism (under Stephen the Great) to powerful narrative representation.

The Sucevita monastery (Manastirea Sucevita), the last of its kind with external frescoes, has the largest and most opulent painted church in Bucovina.
In the interior the congregation room (naos), with the Iconostasis (icon screen) in front of it, is particularly rich. In the picture on the right the benefactor stands with his family before the throne of Christ and offers up the church. (The picture continues round the corner.)
Here the side apses have windows, so the interior is not as dark as in some of the churches.

A panorama picture (4 exposures) of the iconostasis and of the Moldavian cupola above it gives an idea of the impressive height of the interior.

This fresco on the south wall of the naos is to the left of the fresco of the benefactor and family. I read the Cyrillic letters as saying Constantine (i.e. son of the benefactor) and Helena, (his wife ?).

The south wall is also in excellent and original condition. On the left is the Akathistos Hymnos (see Humor) and in the middle the family tree of Jesse.

Around the three apses in 7 rows are again the host of the saints worshipping the Virgin Mary and the child Christ (including Deesis and Supplication Group). The frescoes were painted at Sucevita on a green background.
On the right is the Gate Tower.

For those who want to stretch their legs and get a good overview of the whole monastery area there are climbable hills to both south (where we are) and to the north, so you can choose depending on e.g. your photographic wishes!
From above one can see the defensive strength of the enclosure, which is almost  a square (100 x 104m). The walls are 6m high and up to 3m thick.
The Bell Tower (back left) still contains the original bells which carry the coats of arms of the donor family.
The west wall - which is unusual - was not painted (the lighter, left-hand wall of the church). According to legend, the artist suffered a fatal fall from the scaffolding and after that the wall was left unpainted.

This beautiful monastery has an idyllic setting in lovely hilly countryside near the small town of Sucevita and in the valley through which the river of the same name flows. To date the monastery is only a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, although the UNESCO symbol is already used for advertising at the entrance gate. It seems clear that the full nomination is only a question of time.
