Dracula als Touristenmagnet

Unser Campinglatz im "Dracula-Ort" Bran befindet sich ca. 25 km südwestlich von Brasov (Kronstadt), direkt zu Füßen mächtiger Karpatenberge. Der "Vampire Camping" wurde erst vor wenigen Jahren eröffnet und weist einen für hiesige Verhältnisse hohen Standard auf. Der kontaktfreudige rumänische Verwalter freut sich darüber, dass wir trotz anfangs schlechten Wetters ein paar Tage bleiben wollen.
Am Ende werden wir für unser Verharrungsvermögen mit einer prächtigen Bergsicht belohnt.

Our camping site in the Dracula-Town of Bran is about 25 km south-west of Brasov, directly at the foot of the Carpathians. Vampire Camping has not been open for very long and for Romania the standard is high. The very friendly Romanian manager is pleased that we want to stay for several days despite the initially poor weather.
At the end we are rewarded for our patience by the view of the mighty mountain backdrop.

Der Ort Bran weist alle Merkmale einer boomenden Region auf: viele schöne Neubauten, Grundstückspreise die, wie uns der Verwalter erzählt, in den letzten Jahren um das 4-5fache gestiegen sind, Fast Food-Restaurants und Unmengen von Souvenirbuden.
Als wir uns der Törzburg (Castel Bran) nähern, sind wir erst einmal schockiert über das Ausmaß an Touristenläden (das Bild zeigt nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt) - und kaufen am Ende doch selbst mit bluttriefenden Draculazähnen bedruckte T-Shirts für unsere Söhne.

The town of Bran shows the signs of a growing and booming town: many newer buildings, rising land prices - 4 to 5 times in the last few years, the camping site manager tells us - fast food restaurants and dozens of souvenir shops.
As we get nearer to the famous Bran Castle, at first we are shocked by the number of tourist shops - the picture above shows only a few of them, but by the end we as well buy Dracula blood-dripping souvenir T-shirts for our sons at home! 

Die Törzburg selbst ist unschuldig in Bezug auf diesen Rummel. Die auf einem steilen Kalksteinfelsen stehende Burg wurde 1377 von Kronstädter Bürgern zur Sicherung der Landesgrenze Siebenbürgen-Walachei und zum Eintreiben von Zollgebühren errichtet - ganz aus Flusskieseln, wie wir lesen, wobei diese mächtige Wehrmauer davon ausgenommen sein muss. Sie erfüllte ihre Aufgabe auch gut und blieb weitgehend originalgetreu erhalten. Die Idee, die Burg mit Dracula in Verbindung zu setzten, kam Ceausescus Chargen in den 70er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts mit dem allmählich aufkommenden Tourismus. Sie ähnelt der fiktiven Burg in Bram Strokers Roman und scheint sich als Heimstätte für Horrorgeschichten anzubieten - jedenfalls beweisen die Touristenzahlen das Funktionieren dieser Marketingstrategie.

Here is Bran Castle itself, standing up impressively on a rocky limestone crag. (The panorama  picture is made up of 6 photos.)
The castle was built in 1377 by the citizens of nearby Brasov on the border to Wallachia at the request of the Hungarian king. It was built as protection against the expanding Ottoman empire to the south and as a customs-post for traders using the Rucar-Bran Pass to cross the Carpathians. It did a good job and much of it is still original.
For a good historical account of the castle see the  official Bran Castle Museum site. This site also contains a useful article about fact and fiction associated with Vlad Tepes, known as Dracula.
There is no written evidence that Vlad Tepes ever owned the castle, but he was a prisoner here for two months in 1462.
In the 1970s Ceausescus followers built on the uncertain Dracula link to encourage tourism. The castle resembles the one in Bran Storers 19th century popular Dracula novel and was used for several films, but Stoker was never here.
The marketing strategy seems to work.

Tatsächlich war die Burg im 15.Jh. wenige Jahre lang im Besitz von Vlad Tepes ("Draculas") Großvater. Er selbst hat angeblich fast zwei Monate als Gefangener darin verbracht. Eine engere Verbindung gibt es nicht. Doch das Nichtvorhandensein einer relevanten "Vampir-Spur" nimmt der Burg weder ihre Schönheit noch ihre Bedeutung.
Die Stadt Brasov schenkte sie, nachdem sie lange als Forstamt gedient hatte, 1920 der rumänischen Königin Maria, die sie restaurieren, weiß tünchen, möblieren und ihren Wünschen anpassen ließ. Nach der Machtergreifung durch die Kommunisten 1948 musste die königliche Familie das Land verlassen, und die Burg ging in Staatsbesitz über. 1957 wurde sie in ein Museum umgewandelt, in dem man heute viele originale Möbelstücke aus dem 16.-19.Jh. besichtigen kann. Auch einen Geheimgang mit einer Geheimtreppe ist zu sehen (li, rechter Rand: Tür zum Geheimgang, re Geheimtreppe).

Quite apart from the thin Dracula connection the castle is interesting and impressive for other reasons.
After it had served for many yeas as a forestry office the town of Brasov donated it in 1920 to the Romanian royal family. The Romanian Queen Marie, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, had it restored and furnished to suit her tastes. After the communists took power in 1948 the royal family had to leave the country and the castle became state property. In 1957 it was made into a museum in which many pieces of furniture from the 16th to the 19th centuries can be seen. There is also a secret stairway from one floor to the next, (right-hand edge of left picture and picture on right).

Königin Maria, die sich stark, auch international, für ihr Volk engagierte und sich gern in rumänischen Trachten zeigte, verstand es, ein gemütliches Heim einzurichten, in dem sich ihre sechs Kinder während der Sommermonate gern aufhielten. Auf obigem Bild werfen wir einen Blick in ihr Schlafzimmer. Sie vermachte 1938 die Burg ihrer Lieblingstochter, Prinzessin Ileana, die bis zur Emigration die Sommer mit ihrer Familie in der Burg und die Winter im ehemaligen Zollhaus verbrachte.

Queen Marie was born into the British royal family, and became a dedicated a loved patriot of Romania after her marriage to Crown Prince Ferdinand, later King of Romania. She knew how to make a comfortable home in which her six children loved to live in the summer months. The picture above shows her bedroom. In 1938 she bequeathed the castle to her favourite daughter Ileana, who resided here with her family until her exile - in the castle in summer and in the winter in the former customs house.

Der Innenhof der Burg, den Königin Maria mit Blumen bepflanzen ließ. In den Brunnenschacht ließ sie einen Fahrstuhl einbauen, der sie bequem zu den tiefer liegenden Gärten brachte.

Der Innenhof von der gegenüber liegenden Seite aus betrachtet. Die vielen vorgelagerten Balkone und Terrassen, auf die man von den meisten Zimmern heraustreten kann, geben dem Burgkomplex trotz seines verwinkelten Aussehens ein südländisches, offenes Flair.

Die Burg umgeben weite, mit großen Teichen angelegte Gärten. Dort befinden sich auch einige Sommerhäuschen mit reizvollem modrigen Aussehen, die sich bisher einer Renovierung entziehen konnten.

 Ob das so bleiben wird, ist ungewiss, so ungewiss wie die Zukunft des ganzen Schlosses und Touristenortes Bran.
Wenige Tage nach unserer Besichtigung (am 26. Mai 2006) wird die Burg feierlich dem Sohn von Prinzessin Ileana, dem in Amerika lebenden, 68jährigen Architekten Dominic  Habsburg, zurückgegeben. In einem Ausmaß wie kein anderes ehemaliges Ostblockland hat Rumänien 2005 beschlossen, von den Kommunisten enteignete Güter zurück zu übertragen.
 Drei Jahre lang soll die Burg noch ein Museum bleiben, was danach mit ihr geschieht, ist zur Zeit völlig unbekannt. Man kann sich leicht vorstellen, wie die Souvenirhändler um ihr Einkommen bangen. Die königliche Familie hatte vom Ausland aus den Vampirkult mit Missfallen beobachtet und sich dadurch ein zweites Mal vertrieben gefühlt.

The castle is surrounded by broad gardens, which include artificial ponds. There are several summerhouses which look delightfully mouldy and decrepit, and have so far escaped renovation. (The roof of this one has a large hole on the reverse side.)

 Whether that will remain so is uncertain, as is the fate of the whole castle and tourist industry in Bran.
 On 26th May 2006, just a few days after our visit, the castle was ceremoniously returned to the son of Princess Ileana, the 68 year-old architect Dominic  Habsburg, who lives in the USA. Romania has determined, much more extensively than any other country of the previous eastern block, to return property confiscated by the Communists to the previous owners or their heirs.
For three years the castle will continue as museum, but what will happen after that is unknown. It is easy to imagine how worried the souvenir shop owners are. The royal family has watched the vampire cult from abroad with distaste and felt themselves exiled for a second time.

Doch schon heute gibt es um die Törzburg herum mehr als den Draculakult, nämlich ein hübsches Freilichtmuseum mit interessanten, zum Teil eingerichteten Bauernhäusern und Tierställen.

But even today there is more to see around the castle than just the Dracula cult. There is an open-air museum with a good collection of rustic houses and farm buildings from the area, some of which are furnished.

Nur wer glaubt, dass der Draculamythos das einzige Pfund sei, mit dem diese Burg und die Gegend wuchern können, muss um ihre Zukunft bangen. Kurzfristig wird es sicherlich zu finanziellen Härten kommen, wenn der neue Besitzer wie erwartet den Vampirtick beendet (wenn er sich denn beenden lässt).
 Doch blind müsste der sein, der die großen Vorzüge und die historische Bedeutung (ganz ohne Dracula!) dieser Burg nicht sieht und außer Acht lässt, zu Füßen welch außerordentlich schönen Berggegend diese mittelalterliche Anlage liegt (siehe unten und die folgenden Kapitel).

Only those who think that the Dracula myths are the only claim to fame for the castle and the surrounding area should be worried about their source of income in future. In the short term there may be financial difficulties, as the new owners are expected to make an end of the vampire fad (if it is stoppable).
Quite apart from that, the castle is historically interesting and significant and lies at the foot of a beautiful mountain area. (See below and following chapter.)

Zu viel versprochen? Man muss nur einfach die Passstraße durch Bran weiterverfolgen und genießt nach wenigen Kilometern diese Aussicht auf das wilde Bucegi-Gebirge mit den zahlreichen Vorbergen.

Wir wollen noch einmal versuchen, an die hohen Schneeberge heranzukommen, und biegen, von Bran kommend (unten li), auf die Talstraße ab, die entlang des Flusses Moeciu zum Ort Moeciu de Jos führt.
Die Nähe zum Touristenmagnet Törzburg und dem Naturpark Bucegi haben in dem schönen Tal zu einem Bauboom geführt. Die meisten der entweder traditionell oder in modernem Stil errichteten Häuser sind Pensionen.

Did we promise too much? You just have to follow the  road up the pass beyond Bran a few kilometres to enjoy the view towards the beautiful Bucegi mountains with their numerous foothills.

Once again we want to try to get nearer to the snow-covered mountains and, driving from Bran away to the left, turn down the road seen down in the valley along the River Moeciu leading to the small town of  Moeciu de Jos.
The nearness to the tourist centre of Bran and to the Bucegi Nature Park have led to a building boom in the pretty valley. Many of the mixture of old and modern houses along the valley are guest-houses and holiday homes.

Dieses Foto ist eigentlich ein winziger Ausschnitt des Panoramabilds darüber und zeigt einen sonnenbeschienenen Bergrücken mit verstreut liegenden Bauernhäuschen vor den höchsten Gipfeln des Bucegi-Gebirges.
Es ist möglich, dass die mittlere Spitze die höchste Erhebung dieser Bergkette darstellt, nämlich den 2507m hohen Berg Omu (das heißt "Mensch").

This picture is actually just a detail taken from the panorama picture above and shows farms on the sun-touched crest of the foothills in front of the higher Bucegi mountains.
We arent sure but this may be Mount Omu  in the middle, the highest peak at 2507m.

Wir finden Gefallen daran, die ungewöhnlichsten Pferdekarren zu knipsen. Dieser hier transportiert etwas Hundehüttenartiges mit einem frei balancierenden Koloss von Hund davor, den wir anfangs für ein riesiges Raubtier halten.

We enjoy photographing the - for us - unusual variety of horse-carts. This one is transporting a sort of wooden shed or kennel. A large dog - looking at first like some wild animal - balances untied on the platform behind it.

Dieses Bild nehmen wir zwar von einem höher gelegenen Straßenabschnitt auf, doch es zeigt noch einmal die wunderbare Harmonie dieser Landschaft. Weitgehend natürlich wirtschaftende, sich selbst versorgende Bauernhöfe vor der anfangs sanft ansteigenden, schließlich jedoch jäh sich bis auf über 2500m erhöhenden Bucegi-Gebirgskette - die Schönheit des Zusammenspiels von Natur und Kultur um den Ort Bran herum hat uns tief ergriffen.

This picture was actually taken from a higher, different section of the road, but shows once again the beautiful harmony of the landscape. Many of the self-supporting farms are cultivated with natural methods on the initially gentle slopes, which then rise up steeply to the Bucegi mountains with their height of just over 2500m. We are very impressed by the combination of nature and culture around the area of Bran.

Eigentlich fahren wir noch die Talstraße entlang und bewundern die Großzügigkeit der örtlichen Bauvorschriften, die zu einem interessanten Stilmix führt. Dieses Holzhaus wird an Ort und Stelle aus naturbelassenen Baumstämmen herausgeschält, zusammengefügt und zurechtgestutzt.

We drive on along the valley and admire the flexibility of the local planning regulations, which leads to an interesting mixture of  buildings. This large log-house is being built from a pile of natural tree-trunks, which are peeled, notched and fitted together on the spot.

So lange es die sich ständig verschlechternde Straße zulässt - und tatsächlich darüber hinaus -, befahren wir den Schotterweg Richtung Bergkette. Als von diesem nur noch ein steil ansteigender Pfad übrig bleibt, gehen wir zu Fuß weiter.
Doch schon bald stoßen wir auf Hindernisse (dieses kann gerade noch genommen werden) wie angeschwollene Bergbäche, die die noch schneebedeckten Gipfel entwässern.

We drive on as far as we can onto the unmade road through the woods towards the mountains. The road  gets worse and worse. From a small parking place at the end we walk on up the steep path. There are a few other groups of walkers as well.
Soon the obstacles get more difficult. Here the tree-trunk made a very slippery bridge over the swift-flowing stream running off the snow-covered slopes higher up.

Ich gebe auf und John steigt weiter. Schon bald tauchen erste Schneefelder auf und plötzlich die steil aufragenden Wände der Hochgebirgszone.
Das Bucegi-Gebirge ist eines der beliebtesten Ski-, Wander- und Klettergebiete der gesamten Karpaten. Es ist gut erschlossen, besitzt zahlreiche Berghütten und auf der von hier aus gesehen hinteren Seite in Richtung des Kurorts Sinaia zahlreiche Berggondeln und Skilifte. Trotzdem besitzt es noch ganz ursprüngliche, schwer erreichbare Täler und bis zu 1000m hoch fast senkrecht aufragende Felswände.

Elli decides to form a stationary rearguard and I carry on up. Soon there are the first patches of snow and suddenly the steep rocky slopes of the mountain peaks ahead of me.
The Bucegi mountains form one of the most popular ski, hiking and climbing areas in the whole of the Carpathians. There is a good infrastructure of huts and ski-lifts, e.g. around the tourist area of Sinaia.
Nevertheless there are natural and unspoilt valleys which are difficult to reach and with up to 1000m high  vertical rocky walls.

In der Übergangsphase von Winter zu Sommer darf der Berg Atem schöpfen und sich selbst genug sein. Das Bucegi-Gebirge bildet übrigens den gewaltigen Karpatenbogen im Kleinen nach. Hufeisenförmig erstreckt es sich südöstlich von Bran und umfasst mit mächtigen Felshängen ein großes Hochtal, in dem, unter Naturschutz stehend, zahlreiche Wildtiere einschließlich Bär, Luchs und Wolf und eine außerordentlich vielfältige Flora ihr Zuhause finden.

The steep path disappears under the snow. I scramble up a bit further, but then, after taking a few more photos, turn back down again and leave the mountains to themselves again.
The Bucegi mountains are a smaller version of the mighty curve of the Carpathians. Formed like a horseshoe they stretch out to the south-east of Bran and their rocky slopes surround a large high valley. Here the nature reserve is home to numerous wild animals, including bears, lynxes and wolves and there is a wide range of flora.
