our tour of Sardinia

Unsere Umrundung Sardiniens führt uns auf der SS 200 zur Nordküste, danach ca. 6 km die Küste entlang bis  Castelsardo (Pop. 5800).

Die für die Stadt namensgebende Burg ganz oben auf dem Berg wurde im 12. Jh. von der genuesischen Familia Doria gegründet. Mit einer neuen Machtübernahme wurde die Burg oft umbenannt. Anfangs hieß sie entweder Castel Doria, Castrum Januae oder Castel Genovese, später Castel Aragonese und dann im 18. Jh. unter dem Haus von Savoyen Castel Sardo.

Our round tour of Sardinia takes us along the SS200 to the north coast, then after about 6 km along the coast to Castelsardo (pop. 5800).
The castle that gives the town its name is at the top of the hill and was founded in the 12th C by the Genoese Doria family. When a new power took over the castle was often renamed. Initially it was either Doria Castle or Castrum Januae or Castel Genovese, later Castel Aragonese and then in the 18th C under the House of Savoy Castel Sardo.

Von der Angelrute dieses Anglers unten auf den Felsen vor der Stadt sind wir gleich sehr beeindruckt.

This angler down on the rocks near the city impresses us straight away with his fishing rod.

Wir schlendern am Hafen entlang die ca. 600m bis zum Ende der Hafenmole, in die das winzige Inselchen Isolotto Frigiano eingebaut wurde. Von der Mole aus gibt es einen guten Ausblick auf die hübsche Stadt.

We stroll past the harbour and along the 600m to the end of the pier, which was built using the tiny islet Isolotto Frigiano. From the pier there is a good view of the pretty town.

Unterhalb der Festung und auf der Seite zum Meer hin  steht die Kathedrale von Castelsardo, die dem Heiligen Antonius dem Großen gewidmet ist. Rechts steht ihr hoher Glockenturm.
Eigentlich ist sie eine Co-Kathedrale. Bis 1839 war sie  Bischofssitz. Dann kam die Zusammenlegung von zwei Diözesen und der hierfür zuständiger Bischof hat seitdem seinen Sitz in Tempio, aber die Kathedrale in Castelsardo behielt ihren Status.

Die Kathedrale ist eine Mischung aus katalanischen Gotik- und Renaissance-Elemente. (Siehe Wikipedia auf Englisch)

Below the fortress on the side towards the sea stands the Cathedral of Castelsardo, dedicated to St. Anthony the Great. On the right is its high bell tower.
Actually it is a Co-Cathedral. Up to 1839 it was a  bishopric. Then came a merger of two dioceses and from then up to now the bishop responsible is based in Tempio, but the Cathedral in Castelsardo retains its status.

The cathedral is a mixture of Catalan Gothic and Renaissance elements. (See Wikipedia)

Castelsardo with - in the middle - the Tower of Frigiano, which dates from the 16th C, has a height of 13m and served as defence against attacks by the Saracens and barbarians.

Beim Verlassen der Stadt bewundere ich ein Auto, das in der Luft geparkt zu sein scheint.

Wir werfen einen letzten Blick auf Castelsardo von der Ostseite, bevor wir auf der SS 134 weiterfahren, die kurz nach der Stadt die Küste verlässt und landeinwärts führt.

We take a last look at Castelsardo from the east side before we continue on the SS 134, which leaves the coast shortly after the town and turns inland.

Auf der Straße nach Valledoria kommen wir am Nuraghe di Paddaggiu vorbei. Wir lesen später (Links D und I), dass er ein komplexer Nuraghe ist, der einen Zentralturm mit einer Resthöhe von 8,5m hat. Er hat auch zwei Seitentürme, die allerdings so kaputt sind, dass der Nuraghe aus der Ferne wie ein einzelner Turm aussieht.

Das wissen wir damals nicht, deshalb, anstelle uns die Mühe zu machen, hoch zu laufen, schauen wir den Turm nur kurz von der Straße aus an und fahren weiter.

On the road to Valledoria we pass the Nuraghe di Paddaggiu. We read later (Links E and  I) that it is a complex Nuraghe, which has a central tower with a residual height of 8.5m. It also has two side towers, but these are so derelict that from a distance the Nuraghe looks like a single tower.

We do not know this at the time so, instead of making the effort to walk up to it, just look at the tower briefly from the road and drive on.

Wir sehen viele Korkeichen unterwegs, von denen regelmäßig, oft im jedem 8. oder 9. Jahr, die Rinde geerntet wird. Nach der Ernte erscheint das Holz rot, deshalb denken wir, dass in diesem Fall die letzte Korkgewinnung nicht lange zurück liegen kann.

We see many cork oaks from the road, of which the bark is harvested typically every 8th or 9th year. After harvesting the wood is red, so we think that on this one the last cork harvest was not long ago.

Wir fahren auf der SS 127 in Richtung Olbia, wo wir die Nachtfähre nehmen wollen. Kurz nach der Durchfahrt von Calangianus sehen wir ein Schild zu einem Gigantengrab (Tomba dei Giganti) und entscheiden uns für eine letzte Besichtigung auf Sardinien.

Die Straße wird eng und dann zur unebenen Schotterstraße, aber endlich finden wir die Stelle.  Die letzten ca. 500m müssen wir zu Fuß gehen.
(Das Grab liegt bei GPS: 40° 54 29.03 N, 9° 10 27.43 O.)

We take the SS 127 towards Olbia where we want to take the night ferry. Shortly after passing Calangianus we see a sign to a Giants Grave (Tomba dei Giganti) and we decide on a final bit of sightseeing in Sardinia.

The road gets narrow and then becomes an uneven dirt road, but we finally find the place. The last 500m are on foot.
(GPS co-ordinates of the grave are are 40° 54' 29.03" N, 9° 10' 27.43" E.)

Die Gigantengräber auf Sardinien sind Monumente der Bonnanaro-Kultur, die von ca. 2.200-1.600 v. Chr. der Nuraghen-Kultur vorausging.

In der Mitte des Pascaredda Gigantengrabs ist von der Portalstele nur der untere Stein mit einem kleinen Eingang erhalten (linkes Bild). Früher stand ein weiterer Stein darauf (vgl. Rekonstruktion eines Gigantengrabes unten).

Die aufrecht stehenden Steine auf beiden Seiten bilden eine etwa 18m breite Kurve (rechtes Bild), wobei die Steine zu den Enden hin niedriger werden.
Die Kurve erinnert einen an die eingeritzten Stierhörner, die wir in der Nekropole von Anghelu Ruju gesehen haben.

The Giants' Graves in Sardinia are monuments of the Bonnanaro culture that dates to between 2200 and 1600 BC and preceded the Nuraghic culture.

In the middle of the Pascaredda Giants' grave, (link is in German), only the lower stone of the portal stele with its small entrance is still there, (left picture).There would have been another stone above it (see reconstruction of a Giants Grave below).

The upright stones on both sides form an approximately 18m wide curve - right picture - in which the height of the stones gets lower towards the ends.
The curve reminds us of the engraved bull's horns we saw in the necropolis of Anghelu Ruju.

This helpful reconstruction of a Giants Grave is on display at the Nuraghe site of Palmavera.

Im Gegensatz zur Rekonstruktion bilden hier teilweise  recht grobe Blöcke die Abdeckung der Galerie. Sie sind auch nicht lückenlos, deshalb kann man in die Galerie hinunterklettern. Im Bild schaut man in Richtung Eingang.
Die Galerie (innen) hat eine Länge von ca. 12 m. 

In contrast to the reconstruction some of the blocks forming the roof of the gallery here look unhewn.  The roof is also not complete, so you can climb down into the gallery. In this picture we look towards the entrance.
The gallery is about 12m long inside.

Der kleine Eingang (links) im mittleren Stein ist wohl nur symbolischer Natur. Er ist zwar etwas mehr als eine nur angedeutete Scheintür, reicht aber höchstens für ein kleines Kind zum Hineingelangen. Wir überlegen, welchen Zweck er hatte: Um ein Grabopfer hineinzureichen? Damit die Seele des Toten kommen und gehen kann? Wir wissen es nicht.

Rechts zeigt der Blick von innerhalb der Galerie in Richtung Eingang. Von Innen sehen die Deckensteine regelmäßiger aus als von Außen.
Wer sonst hat über die Jahrhunderte diesen Ausblick mit uns geteilt?

The small entrance - left - in the middle stone is probably only symbolic. Although it is more than a false door it is only large enough for a small child to get through at the most. We wonder  what purpose it had: To put grave offerings through? So that the soul of the dead can come and go? We do not know.

The picture on the right shows the view from the gallery towards the entrance. From inside the ceiling stones look more regular than they do from outside.
Who else over the centuries has shared this view with us?

Am weitesten entfernten Ende der Galerie ist eine waagerechte Steinplatte auf mittlerer Höhe eingebaut, aber jetzt liegt nichts Interessanteres darauf als eine leere Zigarettenschachtel.

At the end of the gallery furthest from the entrance there is a horizontal stone slab half way up from the floor, but there is nothing more interesting on it now than an empty cigarette box.

Die Korkeiche - als letztes Bild bevor es dunkel wird - steht neben der Straße unweit vom Pascaredda Gigantengrab.

Das restliche Tagesprogramm für uns sieht vor, in Olbia einen Platz auf der Nachtfähre zum Festland zu bekommen. Damit beenden wir unsere Zeit auf Sardinien.

Später: Die Nachtfähre hat soweit geklappt, aber leider nur mit Ziel Civitavecchia statt Livorno, weil sie ausgebucht war, und wir wollten nicht in Olbia übernachten. D.h. wir hatten am nächsten Tag auf dem Festland viel weiter auf der Straße zu fahren.

The remainder of our days program consists of getting a place on the night ferry from Olbiaa to the mainland. We now come to the end of our time in Sardinia.

Later: We did catch a night ferry, but unfortunately had to take one to Civitavecchia, because the one to Livorno was fully booked and we didnt want to spend the night in Olbia. Because of that we had a lot further to drive on the mainland next day.

Sehr subjektives Fazit eines total ungeplanten Aufenthaltes auf Sardinien:
Vieles an der Natur (Beispiel 1, Beispiel 2) fanden wir schön, aber im Nordosten waren wir etwas enttäuscht, weil es uns zu arg touristisch erschlossen vorkam.
Wir fanden mehrere antike Stätten sehr interessant (insbes. die Nuraghen-Kultur).
Die Nächte waren unangenehm stickig, auch im Oktober.
Die Insel ist leider weniger Womo-freundlich/restriktiver als gedacht.
Wir haben die persönliche Gastfreundschaft sehr genossen.

Very subjective summary of a totally unplanned stay in Sardinia:
We saw a lot of beautiful nature, (Eg. 1, Eg. 2), but were rather disappointed by the north east, because it seemed too developed for tourists'.
We enjoyed very interesting ancient sites (especially Nuraghic culture).
We found the nights uncomfortably stuffy even in October.
The island is unfortunately less friendly/more restrictive for camper vans/mobile homes than we expected.
We enjoyed personal Sardinian hospitality very much.
