Plowdiw

Plovdiv

Nominiert als UNESCO-Welterbestätte

Nominated as UNESCO World Heritage

Setting out from Melnik in the south-west corner of Bulgaria we drive over the mountains to Plovdiv. On the left are the Rila Mountains and on our right firstly the Pirin Mountains and later the Rhodope Mountains. After the mountain trip we reach on the next day the Upper Thracian Plain.

On the road we quite often see large Roma families.

Then we reach Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria with about 370000 inhabitants, and find a simple camping site, (more later), not far from the main road leading into the city from the west.

First we visit the old city, which in 2004 was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the houses were built during the period of the Bulgarian National Revival in the 19th century, when the inhabitants of the city, still within the Ottoman Empire, were becoming wealthier and more self-confident.

Many of the magnificent houses have been lovingly restored and are well worth seeing.
However, as a tourist wanting to take photos in the picturesque narrow streets, you often have to wait for cars to get out of the picture.

This beautiful building, built between 1846 and 1848, is now part of the Regional History Museum. In it documents and artefacts from the period of National Revival particularly from the early Ottoman period, (15th to 17th C),  are kept and displayed. They testify to the growing resistance to Ottoman rule and in particular against the imposed dominance of the Greek language and church through the the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The house was given to the rich merchant Dimitar Georgiadi as dowry on his marriage to Elena Kendindenoglu, daughter of a wealthy tailor and merchant. Since then it is called the Georgiani House.

The museum is located in the Kuyumdzhieva House, built in 1847.

Despite the failing evening light this flowering wisteria is still a colourful eye-catcher.

Above the old town on the hill Nebet Tepe is the historical old citadel area.

In the right picture you see part of the modern city from the hill. The eastern church-like building in the foreground is Chifte Banya, a former Turkish bath dating from the 16th C,  which is now art centre.

Here on Nebet Tepe there was a settlement of the Thracian tribe of the Bessi. (See Wikipedia about Plovdiv). It was conquered by Phillip II of Macedon, (father of Alexander the Great), in 341 BC., who gave the town its name Philipopolis and whose grave we admired in Vergina (Aigai) in Greece.

Later the Thracians regained control until the Romans came and conquered the city in 72 BC.
The city was strategically very important for the Romans and also for later armies, as it was situated on the Via Militaris, the Roman road from the Balkans to Constantinople, which for a long time was the only mainland route between the East and the West.

The Plovdiv Roman theatre in the old town is one of the best preserved in the world. It was built in about 116 - 7 AD in the reign of Emperor Trajan. It is situated between the Dschambas Tepe and the Taksim Tepe, the other two hills, (after Nebet Tepe, see above), of the three hills referred to in the name Trimontium given to the city by the Romans. However, today the older Macedonian name Philipopolis is still used in connection with the theatre.
The theater could seat up to 7,000 spectators and today events are still held here.

From the higher rows of seats you have a beautiful view beyond the remaining columns of the old theatre backdrop to the distant natural scenery of the Rhodope mountains in the south.

Only 200 metres away from the theatre and in the middle of a busy shopping area we discover quite unexpectedly the remains of the Roman Stadium of Philipopolis. The integration of old and new elements at their different levels is a charming example of urban planning. The stadium is an oasis of peace in the middle of the busy city.

What remains of the stadium are the well-preserved spectator stands in the curve at the end of the running track. A picture on the wall, (below the small restaurant), shows how the running track of the stadium stretched out from here. A comparison with the picture above shows that the modern Prince Alexander I shopping street largely follows the track of the former stadium.

In the other direction we see the old entrance to the stadium and in the background a mosque, which we visit next.

The Dzhumaya mosque was built between 1421 and 1451 and is one of the oldest Ottoman religious buildings in the Balkans. It is the second mosque that was built on this site. The first building was built directly after the Ottoman conquest in about 1364 on the site of the previous cathedral.

The large interior with murals dating to about 1800 measures 33 x 27m. The mosque has a minaret and nine domes.

Another highlight of Plovdiv for us was the Archaeological Museum (l). There we admired in particular very remarkable original gold treasures and other Thracian objects.

Photography is unfortunately forbidden in the museum, but as a substitute, we have on the right a picture of this replica drinking vessel, which serves as a water fountain in the pedestrian precinct of Prince Alexander I Street. The original, (smaller), belongs to the Panagyurishte treasure, ca. 300 BC, that we previously saw in the museum.

On the opposite corner from the museum we discover the Restaurant India (below), try it out and find it so good that we come back again a few days later.

In the pedestrian zone there are unexpected dangers (l) but very friendly people. The people at the kebab stall (r) laugh and are pleased to pose for a picture.

Finally, just for interest we show a view of the camping site (l), simple but sufficient for our needs.

An unusual feature of the camping site is that it also serves as a brothel (r). We were only once disturbed by proceedings, when a somewhat tipsy visitor knocked on the camper late in the evening to ask for a light.

Aside from that, we much enjoyed Plovdiv and found it a nice, friendly and lively city with many interesting highlights.
