Zakopane

und ein Blick auf die Hohe Tatra

and a glance at the Tatra Mountains

Hier, in einem der südlichsten Zipfel Polens, suchen wir ganz intensiv. Meist hat es eine Rundreise so in sich, dass man mehr findet, als man sucht. Doch hier suchen wir, und zwar nach Bergen, nach dem polnischen Gebirge - und finden nichts.
Wir fahren eine Straße im Touristenort Zakopane ("polnische Winterhauptstadt") hinab, und eigentlich sollten sich am Ende der Straße die gezackten Gebirgskämme der Tatra erheben, doch sie bleiben unsichtbar, hinter undurchdringlichen Wolken verborgen.

We start an intensive search here in the southernmost corner of Poland. Usually on as round trip you find more than you expect. But here we are looking for mountains, Polish mountains, and find nothing.
Here we are driving along a road in the tourist locality of Zakopane (the Polish winter capital). Ahead of us the peaks of the Tatra mountain chain should be in view, but they remain invisible and we just have to believe they are there behind the cloud-banks.

Was sich uns dafür anbietet, ist eine Touristenhochburg im Regen. Zakopane, vor wenig mehr als 200 Jahren ein unbedeutendes Dorf, hat heute 30000 Einwohner und erlebt einen jährlichen Besucheransturm von 3 Millionen Menschen.

What we find instead is a tourist centre in the rain. Zakopane, which only about 200 years ago was an insignificant village, now has a population of 30000 and every year is subject to an invasion of 3 million tourists.

Die meisten Touristen treiben sich bei diesem Wetter im touristisch bestens erschlossenen Zentrum herum.
Dabei ist das Wort "Plastik" die Zauberformel des Moments: In den Auslagen der Schaufenster hängen unzählige Plastik-Regenmäntel zu 10 Zloty das Stück. Sie haben den Schnitt einer weiten Mülltüte, aber eine hohe Funktionalität. Wer sich nicht vorstellen konnte, dass Regen im Mai so lang andauernd und Wolkenwände so dicht sein können, geht heute als bunter Plastiksack.

In this weather most of the tourists seem to be in centre of the town where the tourist trade is well-developed.
At the moment the word plastic is the magic phrase: raincoats 10 Zloty each (€4,50). They have the modish cut of a wide rubbish sack, but are functionally effective. Those who thought that the rain in May would not last so long or that the cloud-banks would not be so dense are now  walking around as coloured plastic sacks.

Obwohl die Touristen im Ort sind, mag keiner die Pferdekutsche nutzen. In Ruhe frisst sich der Gaul durch den Futtersack.
Viel attraktiver sind da die unzähligen Souvenirshops und typischen Imbissbuden, die hauptsächlich frische Waffeln anbieten, dick mit Sahne und Marmelade bestrichen.

Although the tourists are in town no-one seems to want to ride the horse-drawn carriage. The horse enjoys the peace and nibbles its fodder.
The innumerable souvenir shops are apparently more attractive, also the typical snack stands which mostly offer fresh waffles thickly smeared with cream and jam.

Zahlreiche Bäche, die die nördliche Tatra entwässern, fließen durch Ort, der der höchstgelegene Polens (838m) ist. Zahlreiche Brückchen verbinden die Touristenläden, die in ihrer Holzkonstruktion die Bauweise der alten Hirtenhäuser der Goralen, der sog. "Ureinwohner" Zakopanes, nachahmen.

Several streams flowing down from the northern Tatra run through Zakopane which at 838m is the highest town in Poland. Numerous bridges provide access to the tourist shops. Their wooden construction follows the building style of the old shepherds huts of the Gorals, the indigenous inhabitants of the area.

Die Goralen, die das Gebiet um die Hohe Tatra zwischen dem 15.-17.Jh. besiedelten und einen eigenen polnisch/slowakischen Dialekt sprechen, sind auch verantwortlich für die vielen hübschen Stände, in denen eine goralische Spezialität verkauft wird: die Oscypki. Was wie gedrechseltes Holzspielzeug aussieht, entpuppt sich als Schafskäse, aus Rohmilch hergestellt und unterschiedlich lang geräuchert, was sich an einer zunehmenden Bräunung erkennen lässt.
Da auch Kinder diese Spezialität zu lieben scheinen, kaufen wir mutig ein bunt gemischtes Sortiment. Der Käse hat eine gummiartige Konsistenz und erscheint uns geschmacklich etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, doch er lässt sich gut überbacken und ist lange haltbar.

The Gorals, who settled the Tatra Mountain area between the 15th and 17th centuries and speak their own Polish-Slowakian dialect, are also responsible for the many pretty stands selling a Goral speciality: Oscypki. What looks like carved wooden toys proves to be sheeps cheese made of raw milk and smoked for different periods of time, which leads to the various shades of brown.
As children seem to like this speciality as well we courageously buy a mixture (r). The cheese has a  rubbery consistency and takes a bit of getting used to, but it keeps well and Elli finds it can also be used for a baked cheese topping.

Auch wenn sich keine Berge blicken lassen, gerät man in und um Zakopane ins Staunen, und zwar über die hiesige Architektur, die so manche Stilblüte treibt. Das Hirtenvolk der Goralen baute traditionell Häuser aus dicken kantigen Holzbalken mit zahlreichen Giebeln und Gauben. Um das Jahr 1900, als aus Zakopane einer der beliebtesten Künstler- und Touristenorte Polens wurde, entwickelte der Architekt Stanislaw Witkiewicz den sog. "Zakopane-Stil", indem er die Goralenbauweise mit Elementen des Jugendstils vereinte.

Even with the mountains invisible Zakopane offers other areas of interest - in particular the variations in local wooden architecture. The Gorals, with their shepherd culture, built traditional houses of thick square-edged beams with numerous gables and roof-windows. Around 1900, when Zakopane was turning into one of Polands most popular artist and tourist resorts, the architect Stanislaw Witkiewicz developed the so-called "Zakopane style" by combining the Goral style with Art Nouveau elements.

Hier sehen wir links ein älteres Gebäude und in der Mitte und rechts zwei neuere Häuser, die die hervorstechendsten Merkmale dieses Stils besitzen, nämlich Wände aus Holzbalken, häufig mit Holzschnitzkunst verziert, und eine ganze Dachlandschaft aus Giebeln und Gauben.

Here on the left an older building, centre and right modern ones, which all have the clearest signs of this style - walls of wood, often decorated by carvings, and a whole landscape of gables and roof-windows.

Trotz unseres notgedrungen zunehmenden Interesses an Holzarchitektur wollen wir der Gebirgswelt nochmals eine Chance geben und fahren über einen hohen Pass bis an die slowakische Grenze. Die besten Ausblicke des Trips haben wir auf diesen beiden Bilder festgehalten.

Despite the rather enforced increased interest in wooden architecture we want to give the mountain scenery another chance and drive over a high pass as far as the Slovakian border. These pictures show the scenic highlights of the trip.

Zurück im zumindest hochnebelfreien Tal amüsiert uns die komplizierte Dacherweiterung eines Hauses (das letzte war wohl zu schlicht) und ein Auto mit britischem Nummernschild in der angrenzenden Wiese. John meint, einem Autodiebstahl auf die Spur gekommen zu sein, doch der Wagen könnte auch einem der zahlreichen Polen gehören, die in Großbritannien als "Polish plumber" (polnische Klempner) berühmt und berüchtigt wurden und in den Ferien die Zurückgebliebenen tatkräftig unterstützen.

Back down in the valley we are interested in a complicated house and roof extension (r).
The British registered car, parked in a field with other cars apparently for sale, raised my suspicions of theft. (We had seen quite a few cars with non-Polish registrations in similar positions.) However it could well be that one of the Polish plumbers well-known in Britain has driven back to help the family building activities.

Am nächsten Tag unternehmen wir einen weiteren Versuch der Bergsichtung mit ähnlich deprimierendem Ergebnis. Zumindest lässt sich erkennen, dass das Gebiet beachtliche Verschmutzungs- oder Sturmschäden aufzuweisen hat.

On the next day we try again to see more of the mountains, with similarly depressing results. We see evidence that the area has suffered both from environmental pollution and from storm damage.

Am Rande einer weiten Wiese steht ein alter Goralenhof aus verwittertem Holz (li). Wahrscheinlich ist er unbewohnt, da der Brunnen verbrettert wurde (re).

At the edge of a wide meadow sands an old Goral farm made of well-weathered wood (l). Probably it is not currently inhabited as the well in front of the house is boarded up. (r)

Wenige Kilometer außerhalb der Stadt wirkt die Natur sehr ursprünglich.

Here, not many kilometres from the town, the woods and streams are pleasantly wild.

Die Blüte bleibt nicht der einzige Höhepunkt. Als wir bergab Richtung Zakopane fahren, steht plötzlich diese schöne Holzkirche neben unserer Straße. Sie heißt "Heiliges Herz Jesu" und wurde Anfang des 20.Jh. erbaut, und zwar in reinstem Zakopanestil, nach einem Projekt des Architekten S. Witkiewicz. Die Kapelle besitzt Wände aus verkanteten Balken, zahlreiche Dachvorsprünge und eine hübsche Holzornamentik, die nicht nur die äußere Fassade verziert, sondern im Innern fortgeführt wird. Der Hauptaltar soll an eine alte Berghütte erinnern.

We pass another point of interest as we drive back down into Zakopane. This beautiful wooden church is right next to the road. It is called the Holy Heart of Jesus and was designed as a project of the architect S. Witkiewicz and built at the beginning of the 20th C in the purest Zakopane style. The chapel has walls of square-edged beams, multiple overhanging roofs and pretty wooden decorations both outside and inside. The altar is apparently supposed to remind people of an old mountain hut.

Und dann, als wir in Zakopane einfahren, reißt die Wolkendecke kurz auf und wir sehen, dass die Berge tatsächlich da sind. Ich quetsche mich durch einen Hinterhof, lasse mich von einem Köter anbellen, nur um diesen denkwürdigen Moment festzuhalten. Das kleinste Hochgebirge der Welt gibt sich die Ehre.

Then, when we arrive in Zakopane, the clouds at last lift a bit and we see that there really are mountains. Elli squeezes through a backyard and lets herself be barked at by a dog, (for her quite an achievement), to capture this memorable moment. The worlds smallest high mountain area makes its appearance. 

Aber es ziert sich noch. Mehr als diese kleine Neckerei bekommen wir heute nicht zu sehen.

But the mountains immediately hide modestly behind the clouds again. We dont get more than this teaser today.

Am nächsten Tag müssen wir aufbrechen. Polen ist groß. Wir haben nicht die Zeit, um tagelang auf die Enthüllung einer schamhaften Dame namens Tatra zu warten.
Steil führt die Straße in das Gebiet "Bukowina Tatrzanska". Das Wetter bessert sich.

Next day we must set off. Poland is big and we dont want to wait too long for the Tatra to reveal itself.
The road leads steeply up into the area called "Bukowina Tatrzanska". The weather is improving.

Die Gemeinde besteht aus mehreren Dörfern, die sich größtenteils in lockerer Form auf den Kämmen der Hügel entlangziehen. Leise steigt in uns eine Ahnung auf von der Schönheit des Gebiets.

The locality consists of several villages mostly strung out loosely along the crests of the hills. The beauty of the area slowly becomes more evident to us.

Und da, am Rande einer Siedlung, neben einem hübschen Haus in typischem Zakopane-Stil, erhaschen wir einen Blick auf die beeindruckende Hohe Tatra, die sich zu drei Vierteln bereits in der Slowakei befindet. Die Tatra stellt den höchsten Teil des Karpatenbogens dar (bis 2654m Höhe), der sich über tausend Kilometer durch mehrere slawische Länder zieht. Die Tatra ist ca. 15km breit und etwas über 50km lang.

And there, at the edge of a village and next to a pretty house in the typical Zakopane style, we at last catch a better glimpse of the impressive Tatra Mountains, three-quarters of which are in Slovakia. The Tatra forms the highest part (up to 2654m) of the long curve of the Carpathian Mountains which extends for over one thousand km and through several countries. The Tatra is a bout 15 km wide and just over 50 km long.

Bei einem kurzen Spaziergang am Bergkamm entlang bewundert John die Blumen eines Vorgartens und darf nicht eher gehen, bevor er nicht die freundliche Großfamilie mitsamt grimmig blickendem Baby fotografiert hat.

While taking a short walk along the crest of the hill I stop to admire the flowers in someones front garden and am kept there until I photograph the friendly family clan including mildly protesting baby. 

Sprachlos stehen wir vor diesem Gebilde, bei dem die gewundenen Linien des Jugendstils, der normalerweise in der Holzornamentik der Häuser zu finden ist, auch auf die Dachwölbungen übertragen wurden.
Die schönsten Wohnhäuser des Gebiets stehen an diesen reizvollen Bergkämmen mit Sicht auf die atemberaubende Hohe Tatra.

We are amazed at this building, in which the flowing Art Nouveau lines normally found in the wooden decorations of the houses have been carried over into curves in the roof.
Not surprisingly, the finest houses in the area are located on the crest of the ridge with a breathtaking view of the Tatra Mountains.

Und so wird am Ende unseres Tatra-Besuchs aus dem vernebelten Geheimnis doch noch ein Anschauungsobjekt, auch wenn wir das Gebirge nicht wirklich betreten haben. Aber wir nehmen eine Ahnung mit von einem Gebirge, das manche als das schönste der Welt bezeichnen.

So at the end of our Tatra visit we are able actually to see what was previously hidden behind the clouds, although we are not able to actually set foot on the mountains. But at least we get an impression of what some people find one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world.
