Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

Ein polnisches Jerusalem

Forty kilometres south of Krakow is a further World Cultural Heritage site, a mysterious Mount Calvary. It is mysterious for us not only because there are few signs, but also because of the thick mist concealing the apparently charming hilly countryside. The landscape is supposed to resemble the area around Jerusalem, but under the conditions we can neither verify nor contradict that.
In the little village of Lanckorona, which has some remarkable old wooden houses, we approach the mystery: the slopes of a hill near Lanckorona represent the biblical Mount of Olives.

Since the 17th C the site Kalwaria Zebrzydowska near the town of the same name has become a place of pilgrimage second in Poland only to Czestochowa. The central elements of it are the Baroque basilica (picture), which is dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, the adjoining convent of the Bernardini Friars and the numerous chapels scattered around in a radius of about 6km.

A million pilgrims visit this place of pilgrimage every year. It is not surprising that numerous souvenir stall owners can make a living here selling religious keepsakes or toys. As everywhere in Poland the children are purposefully guided by the parents and others to visit the national religious shrines - and are correspondingly rewarded.

Even if you are not Catholic it is touching to see how the parents try to encourage their children in the Catholic faith. Young boys are proud to be photographed on the steps of the church or in front of the statue of Pope John Paul II, who came from nearby and who made several visits to the monastery.

As we dont find signs to help us find the chapels scattered around on the hills we hunt around for a while and soon find some of them.
In the years after 1605 forty chapels and churches were built in the area, each one different. Built in Baroque or Mannerist style, each portrays a station in the passion of Christ or in the life of Mary or some other Christian subject. The chapels have names such as Pilates Palace, Grave of the Mother of God (r), The Burden of the Cross, Jesus falls for the first/second time, Ascent into Heaven, etc.

In the valley we finally do find some signs (l) along the pilgrimage route, but not understanding Polish they dont help us on very much. In a small chapel next to the bridge in the picture below is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk (patron saint of bridges, see Holasovice and Prague in the Czech Republic).

It was the Voivode Mikolaj Zebrzydowski of Krakow who saw a resemblance between his lands and the topography of Jerusalem and renamed his hills accordingly to Mount Zion, Golgotha, the Mount of Olives and Temple Hill. The little River Skawinka he renamed as the (biblical) Brook of Cedron (picture). It  which either crosses or is crossed by the pilgrims route connecting the stations, depending whether the pilgrim uses the Angel Bridge or gets his feet wet in the Cedron by walking through the ford.
Famous passion plays attended by hundreds of thousands of people take place here in Holy Week.

Rising up behind the monastery is the hill called Golgatha on which another chapel stands (and beyond that other ones again). Because of rain and mist (and because we dont want to climb the muddy path) only the gentle contour of a chapel can be seen in the centre of the picture.

The Voivode Zebrzydowski built the Golgotha chapel in about 1601 according to plans from Jerusalem and soon numerous pilgrims came to visit it. To protect the shrine he requested the Franciscans, (called Bernardini Friars in Poland), to settle on the Calvary Hill. Soon, between 1604 and 1609), a monastery and a monastery church were built (picture).
The monastery has apparently been renovated recently. The gentle colours of the building give the complex a feeling of harmony. Our blue camping bus rather stands out in front of it, to advantage we think, but then we are biased.

The basilica stand on a hill that first has to be climbed. Some people find the slope an effort.
The front of the church faces the valley and behind it in the prettily wooded hilly countryside are the numerous chapels and stations of the Passion and of the life of Mary.

Although today is cold and rainy with wind blowing uncomfortably through the arcades there are groups of pilgrims who listen thoughtfully to the words or prayers of the priest guiding them.

The inside of the basilica dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels is magnificently Baroque. Gold was not rationed as in the course of the Counter-Reformation in the 17th C the areas re-conquered by the Catholic Church received a lot of financial support.

In the centre of the altar with its excess of gold the picture of the Madonna shines in its red surroundings. As we do not realize until we go behind it through one of the arches at the side, the mighty altar stands freely in the room.

On the reverse side of the altar is another altar with a sculpture of the crucified Christ and numerous angels. This side is no less magnificent with gleaming gold and silver inlays.

The heart of the church is this icon in a side chapel, in which a mass is currently taking place. It is the icon of Our Lady of Calvary, also called the Weeping Mother of God, to which miracles have been attributed. According to the account of the believers this Madonna wept tears of blood on 3rd May, 1641. This was recognized by a priest as a work of God. Eventually the owner brought the icon to Zebrzydowska where this chapel was built for the icon. In August 1887 the Madonna and the Child Jesus were crowned with the approval of the Pope of the time (see Czestochowa).

According to another report the deeply religious father of Pope John Paul II brought his nine year-old son to this picture. His mother had just died and the father told the boy Karol : from now on she will be your mother. Apparently the future pope often prayed here. When visiting as pope he brought a golden rose for the Madonna, which can now be seen standing in a vase to the left of the picture.

The extensive buildings of the convent of the Bernardini Friars from outside (above) and from inside (below, after we have entered through the portal). The large courtyard area can cater for many pilgrims and also houses a seminary for priests.

Schön geformte Glockentürme über neu gedeckten Dächern.

Finely formed bell-towers rise up above newly tiled roofs.

Mount Calvary retains something of mystery for us, but here is one more picture up towards the shrine hidden in the mist.
