The stone ship

Segovia is described as being like an enormous stranded ship made of stone. The Alkazar forms the prow, the towers of the cathedral the masts and the aqueduct is the rudder at the stern. We come from the direction of El Escorial  through busy evening traffic and see first the monumental aqueduct in front of us. Walking under it we find ourselves near the mediaeval heart of this lively town.

The aqueduct was built in th 1st century AD by the Romans and supplied water to the town up to the early  20th century. The 166 arches were built of massive granite blocks without mortar and vary in height between 7 and 28m.

The opposite end of the old town is marked by the Alkazar. The castle is on a rocky promontory almost 100m high. After Romans, Visigoths and Arabs had left the town, it was resettled by the Spanish.

The Alkazar was started in the 11th century and Segovia become for centuries the residence of the Castilian kings. After severe fire damage in the 19th century  it was rebuilt in the current romantic style with towers and turrets.

From near the Alkazar there is a good view of the surrounding neighbourhood. In contrast to the new roads are an old Romanesque church and monastery.

The 16th century cathedral towers above the old streets and is the last large gothic church in Spain. Unfortunately it is too late in the evening for us to visit either cathedral or Alkazar.

We are not the only people to find the setting romantic.

The wall is still complete around the old town which has a commanding position up on a hill. There are fine views of the town from the valley paths below.

This panorama shows best the Alkazar as the prow of the good ship Segovia.
A family uses the meadow below for an evening walk and to give dog and child some exercise.

A last look up at the Alkazar. The light is fading and the moon is already visible. The old town of Segovia and its aqueduct belong to the UNESCO world heritage list and are - not surprising - a magnet for tourists.
