Auf nach Plitvice / Off to Plitvice
23.4. - 24.4.2004

We travel by ferry from Cres to the island of Krk and then over the bridge to the mainland. We were almost the last to get onto this ferry and were glad not to be in the queue on the hill. They have a long wait ahead of them.

Was pleased to get a near picture of this Italian Wall Lizard *,  which was so enjoying the sun on a warm post that it didn't bother to move away for a while.

The evening we reached the camping site near the Plitvice Lakes National Park (see the next thrilling installment) was warm and the sky was clear. At night the (about 1/3) Moon and Venus were very bright.

The next day, after we had been in the park for 1/2 hour the rain started and brought the lakes right to our caravan doorstep. So there was time to write up the time on Cres and Losinj in the IBM laptop.

The rain continued, so as the border to Bosnia Herzegovina is only about 15 km away, we decide on a quick visit to the town of Bihac. The border controls remind us of pre-EU times - check of boot contents, copy taken of green insurance card, etc.

The countryside and architecture on the other side of the border are not very different, except that instead of churches there are white and shining mosques.

There are still clear signs of the hostilities that accompanied the separation of Croatia from the rest of Jugoslavia around 1991. The now border town of Bihac was presumably of strategic importance.

.

Now the town centre seems rather dismal. Some of that impression may have been due to the poor weather, but it does look as if repairs are still a luxury

The enchanting riverside scenery give us a much more positive impression, although the river level is very high after the heavy rainfall...

... but these colourfully painted sluice controls on the river somehow show civic pride and the will to get everything going again.
