Kloster Batschkowo

Bachkovo Monastery

Nominiert als UNESCO-Welterbestätte

Nominated as UNESCO World Heritage

und die Wunderbaren Brücken

and the Wonderful Bridges

Setting out from Plovdiv we visit the Batschkowo Monastery, which is about 30 km to the south on the northern side of the Rhodope Mountains.

Many sales booths line the road leading to the monastery. They probably expect a lot of visitors today, as it is Labour Day, a public holiday in Bulgaria.

Around the main entrance there are many visitors. There are also crippled beggars waiting for visitors and hoping for alms.

Above the entrance hangs a banner (l), which I only manage to decipher later. The text is a well known one: Christ is risen!' The banner was probably hung up for the Orthodox Easter festival, just three weeks earlier.

The entrance arch (r) leads into a beautiful, large courtyard.

The monastery was founded in 1083, originally for Georgian monks. It is, following the Rila monastery, the second-largest monastery of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and is, like Rila, considered a national sanctuary.

The monastery was nominated in 1984 as Candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

Monks engage in friendly conversation with the visitors (l).

The picture on the right was taken looking back from the other end of the courtyard towards the entrance. On the right wall of the monastery buildings we admire an impressively long fresco.

The fresco originates from 1846 and depicts scenes of the monastery's history.

In the middle of the main courtyard there are two churches directly connected to one another.

On the left is the Archangels Church dating from about 1200, the only building of the main complex to survived the fire of 1595.

The vaulted entrance hall of the church is open on both sides and painted with frescoes dating from about 1845.

The newer  church to the right of it is the central monastery church, the Cathedral Church, built in 1604. It is dedicated to the "Dormition of the Mother of God", which corresponds approximately to the Ascension of Mary.

At the entrance, the visitors queue patiently (1), and their wait continues within the porch (r).

On the way through, frescoes dating back to 1643 can be admired, or, as is the case for most of the  visitors, not really noticed.

In the church itself, the icons are particularly venerated; This involves reverently greeting them but not worshipping them, we are told.

Photography directly inside seems inappropriate. We only allow ourselves to take pictures from a distance in the porch.

Particular attention is paid to the icon of the Virgin Mary with the Baby Jesus (r). It is said to have been donated to the monastery by Georgians in 1311 and is supposed to have miraculous powers to heal and help all those who touch it.
On the second day of Easter a religious ceremony takes place in which numerous believers follow this icon in a procession.

In the refectory (the dining room) of the monastery, we are at last allowed - after payment of a moderate fee - to take as many photos as we want.

The dining room and the frescoes were built and painted at the same time  (between 1601 and 1643), as the monastery church and the frescoes in its porch (see above).

The beautifully painted frescoes show many biblical and philosophical themes and persons.
The long marble floor with 8 legs in a single row is also very impressive.

In this picture taken towards the entrance you get a better impression of the vivid colouring of the wall paintings. The seated Mother of God looks out at us from a niche.

As a last item I walk about 300m from the monastery complex to a building which combines ossuary (lower floor) and cemetery chapel (upper floor).
The ossuary is the oldest building in the monastery and dates back to the time of the monastery foundation, i.e. about  the 11th century.

Inside there are supposed to be frescoes some of which date right back to the 12th century, but today the doors are unfortunately closed.

After the visit to the monastery, it is too early for us to return to Plovdiv.
We decide to make a trip into the Rhodope Mountains to the signposted 'Wonderful Bridges', one of the 100 official Bulgarian tourist sites.

It is about 45 km away over passable but partly narrow and winding roads, which lead us up to an altitude of ca. 1450 m.

Here in the Karst Valley of the Erkyupria River, several very impressive arches or bridges have been created by erosion.
In the right picture I am walking through, which gives an idea of their great size.

In the evening we drive back to our camp site in Plovdiv.
