Kastoria

Kastoria am See / Kastoria by the lake

From the Prespa Lakes we drive about 50 km further south to the town of Kastoria (with ca. 36000 inhabitants). The older parts of the town lie on a peninsula about 2 km long, which points out into Lake Kastoria, (also known as Lake Orestiada).

The picture shows the narrowest point of the peninsula (see also map below).

Since Ottoman times the fur business has flourished in Kastoria. In particular, so-called 'bodys' are produced here from pieces of fur as one stage in the process of fur production. They are exported all over the world and Kastoria leads the world in this branch of the industry.
In the city we notice a lot of fur shops, but such 'customer outlets' are presumably only a side-issue of the export-oriented manufacturing industry, which is so important to the city (and to Greece).

Looking for a place to stay overnight in the camper  we drive clockwise right around the lake, altogether about 24 km, (see map).
We consider this quiet spot near the Museum in Dispilio on the southern shore of the lake, but decide to drive on further.

Later on we find out that in 1993, in the course of excavations of a Neolithic settlement in Dispilio, among other artefacts the quasi-ancestor of today's tablet computers was found.
The Dispilio Tablet, a wood panel with engraved characters, was dated using the C-14 method to an astounding 5260 ± 40 BC. It has not yet been officially published in academic terms, but could be one of the oldest documents in the world.
Probably we would have learned more about this in the museum.

After completing the round trip we arrive again in Kastoria and drive onto the peninsula to continue our search. This time we drive the shore road in an anti-clockwise direction. Below the hospital we find a place to park. It is not ideal - brightly lit and loud from traffic to the hospital - but it is late and we have been looking for a long time so we decide to stay there.

A little later there we are surprised by a knock on the door. A Greek man on a moped wants to tell us that there is a better place to stay overnight somewhere else. Unfortunately it sounds as if he is trying to sell us something - language is a problem - so we politely refuse and stay there. We spend an only moderately comfortable night.

Next day we continue along the main road and after less than 1 km reach the quiet  monastery of Panagia (St. Mary) Mavriotissa, (picture and see map above), where the overnight parking by the lake would have been ideal.

So the suggestion by our Greek visitor was absolutely correct and was meant in a friendly way.
Hopefully we learn something from our misjudgement of the situation!

The clouds are mirrored in the water of the lake.

The reflections of the clouds in the water of the lake (pictures above and below) are particularly beautiful on the morning drive round the peninsula.

In the lower picture, the lake near the shore is very  green because of algae.
Unfortunately, as we learn later, the lake water is heavily over-fertilized and - to quote the Frankfurter Allgemeine (online) in an article dated 8.7.2012 - "some households still channel their faeces directly into the lake".

Gänse und ein Krauskopfpelikan / Geese and a Dalmatian Pelican

Some of the birds of Kastoria are easy to "capture" - e.g. the geese on the left hopeful for bread crumbs. Some are more difficult: - a lonely, Dalmatian Pelican flying past (r).

A fisherman sails past on the still lake.

Almost at the end of our circuit of the peninsula a fisherman chugs past making an attractive motif on the still water (pictures above and below).
In the background on the right is Kastoria's neighbor town Chloi.
On the north side of Kastoria, opposite Chloi, where the moored boats float peacefully on the green water, we say good-bye to the beautifully reflecting Lake Kastoria.

The view from a projecting rock down to the River Venetikos.

On the way  to Meteora, we take a short break at a point where there is a dramatic view from a projecting rock (left and centre-bottom of right picture) down at River Venetikos winding past.
