Blick ins Tal, Delphi / View into valley, Delphi

There is a fine view from the small town of Delphi into the valley of the River Pleistos below and to the 15 km distant sea.

Gymnasium, Delphi

The famous archaeological site is about 1 km from the town.
Here we look down from the road to the gymnasium area.

Heilige Straße / Sacred Way

The Sacred Way was the path taken by visitors on their pilgrimage up to the temple of Apollo.

Modell von Delphi / Model of Delphi

The model shows what Delphi used to look like.
The Sacred Way leads from lower right behind the  wall up between the treasuries, then turns right past the high sphinx column (centre) to reach the large temple of Apollo (upper centre).

Omphalos

This is one of the several copies there were of the Omphalos. The phallic navel stone was revered in the sanctuary of the temple of Apollo. (for more see Wikipedia.)

The reconstructed treasury of the Athenians. There were at least nine treasuries lining the Sacred Way in which the valuable votive offerings of the respective towns were kept.

Sphinx

In about 560 BC the wealthy Island of Naxos sent this marble Sphinx as an offering to Apollo. The whole statue including the Ionic column which she sat on stood 12,5m high. It was located in a privileged position near the Temple of Apollo, (see picture of the model of Delphi above), and near the Rock of the Sibyl.

Fels der Sibylle / Rock of the Sibyl

Rock of the Sibyl. Tradition says that Hierophile, the first priestess of Delphi stood here. (Priestess = Greek Sibylla),
The Sibyl was not the same person as the Pythia, who spoke the famous oracles of Delphi.

Apollontempel / Temple of Apollo

Unfortunately there is not much of the once great Temple of Apollo left standing.
In the Adyton, a small (ca. 3m x 4m) inner room whose name means No entry, the Pythia uttered her puzzling prophecies. She was in a trance caused by inhaling fumes from a crack in the ground.

Teile von Säulen / Pieces of columns

The tidily collected pieces of pillars which are waiting for some future restoration project look like oversize childrens toys.

Theater / Theatre

The musical parts of the 4-yearly Pythian Games in honour of Apollo took place in the theatre here. The theatre (3rd - 4th C BC) had room for 5000 spectators compared to 14000 in the theatre in Epidaurus, ...

... but the backdrop here is even more breathtaking than there.

Stadion / Stadium

The sporting competitions of the Pythian Games took place here in the stadium.

For the 3 months surrounding the games there was a Holy Delphic Peace so that participants and visitors could travel to and from the games in safety.

Feuerlöscher zwischen den Steinen / Fire extinguishers among the stones

It is good to see there are fire extinguishers available in the current hot and dry weather.

Moussaka

We hadnt had the obligatory moussaka in Greece up to now so made up for it in Delphi.

Wagenlenker / Charioteer

In the Delphi museum stands the famous charioteer. A chariot race was part of the Pythian Games and this figure together with the horses and chariot were donated by the victor in 478 or 474 BC. (Wikipedia)

Fortunately the figure was buried by an earthquake in 373 AD, otherwise it would have shared the fate of most bronze statues and would have been melted down as material for weapons or tools.

Trinkschale / Drinking cup

The god Apollo is depicted on this beautiful kylix (drinking cup) dated 480 - 470 BC. With his left hand Apollo is touching his lyre and with the right he is pouring out a libation. The black bird is a reminder of his mythical love for the beautiful daughter of a king.

The picture reminds us at the end of this chapter that Apollo was the main object of veneration in Delphi for many centuries.
